THE BENEFITS OF VIDEO SESSIONS
Telepractice has been used in speech-language pathology for over 35 years. Its use has been steadily increasing over the years with technological advances and improved access. Numerous research studies have validated the use of telepractice as an effective way of providing speech therapy.
Video sessions have been part of my service delivery model since long before COVID-19. As always, they will only be recommended if my clinical judgement supports that strategies delivered through a screen will benefit you as greatly as they would if we were sitting in front of one another in the same room.
In addition to the obvious benefit of reducing the spread of COVID-19, here are some additional benefits of video sessions:
At this time, in-person visits require both the client and clinician to wear masks and/or face shields. This makes voice and speech therapy challenging! Working through the safety of a monitor eliminates the need for PPEs, which allows you to see your clinician’s modelling clearly and to speak or sing freely.
Most of us are busier than ever juggling the demands of work and home. Although traffic has improved in recent months, eliminating the drive to the clinic saves precious time.
Likewise, without the need to travel to the clinic, my schedule is more flexible, allowing me to accommodate you with a broader range of session options.
With the shift to online classes and work, communicating with others using video technology has become a regular occurrence for many in recent months. Video sessions provide the opportunity to observe your voice and communication skills within this functional context, allowing me to identify your specific needs and streamline goals. In addition, services are rendered in an environment where you are most comfortable – the same environment in which you will likely practice recommended exercises. This makes carryover to everyday communication contexts easier.
